“Kaya“: A Feeling, Thinking, Kantian Rock

Rock, lighting, and sound filmed with Canon EOS6D camera.

Kaya, from Kaya’aton’, means “she who arranges rocks” in the Native American language.

Philosopher Immanuel Kant proposed the concept of the “thing-in-itself,” that humans can never perceive the entirety of an object other than its superficial qualities. Due to the limitation of senses, humans can perceive a piece of rock as a hard substance, but may not interpret the rock’s inner qualities, such as emotion and other underestimated qualities.

This, however, tends to neglect deeper meanings of substances and reduce them to elements that are taken for granted. To explore the inner emotion of objects, therefore, is to transcend limitations of understanding and begin to ponder the metaphysical origin of substances. This short video is created as an exploration of “New Materialism.” By attributing sounds that are not commonly associate with a rock, I attempt to explore its deeper emotion.
